Director, Safety Programs
This position is currently a hybrid remote/in-office position.
American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is looking for a knowledgeable and impactful Director of Safety Programs to join our team. AFPM is a leading trade association representing the high-tech American manufacturers of virtually the entire U.S. supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels and home heating oil, as well as the petrochemicals used as building blocks for thousands of vital products in daily life, from paints to plastics, space suits to solar panels, and medicines to mobile phones.
The Director, Safety Programs is responsible for the oversight and direction of AFPM’s Safety Programs and leads a team of professionals in the areas of process and occupational safety, statistics and reporting, committees and meetings, AFPM’s Safety Portal, and AFPM’s Immersive Learning program. This position engages and interacts with AFPM’s members, associate members, and other trade associations.
This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Vice President, Technical and Safety Programs.
Responsibilities
- Manages a team of professionals and is responsible for training, developing, coaching, providing feedback, and managing to goals and objectives.
- Ensures that our safety programs follow documented processes and procedures, are reviewed for continuous improvement, and meet the needs of membership.
- Supervises the team members who manage the process safety, occupational safety, immersive learning, safety awards, safety information hub and safety statistics programs.
- Participates in and supports outreach at trade shows, conferences, and relationship building within the membership and other industry leaders.
- Provides support and guidance to others at AFPM who participate in regulatory safety issues, conference planning, and the various initiatives that each committee accomplishes.
- Assists with the vision and growth of AFPM’s safety-focused Immersive Learning Program by providing guidance on specific projects including the use of virtual reality training techniques.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, math, science, or related field or commensurate experience and training; an MBA or other relevant graduate degree a plus.
- Proven ability to understand, analyze, and clearly communicate complex information to technical and non-technical audiences.
- 5+ years of staff management experience in the energy or related industry; trade association experience a plus.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and other relevant software programs.
- Highly skilled in written and verbal communication, team management techniques, and relationship-building.

Senior Associate, Technical & Safety Programs

AFPM is a dynamic trade association representing high-tech American manufacturers of virtually the entire U.S. supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels and home heating oil, as well as the petrochemicals used as building blocks for thousands of vital products in daily life, from paints to plastics, space suits to solar panels, and medicines to mobile phones.
The Senior Associate, Technical and Safety Programs provides overall support to the Vice President, Technical and Safety Programs and the Program team as needed, including logistical and administrative assistance, conference and speaker coordination, tracking and maintaining data and deliverables, and both internal and external communication with AFPM staff, AFPM members, and other AFPM industry and business contacts.
This is a full-time non-exempt position reporting to the Vice President, Technical and Safety Programs.
Responsibilities
- Supports multiple, nationwide meetings, conferences, and events by mastering our speaker management system, managing speaker correspondence and scheduling, and responding in a timely manner to all information requests.
- Maintains assigned committee documents, calendars and rosters, and makes relevant updates to online membership resources.
- Researches emerging and relevant trends and supports the administration and improvement of departmental projects, meetings and other initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Two to four years of administrative support experience in a similar environment; trade association experience a plus.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat; proficiency in association management software and applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, teamwork skills and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational and administrative skills.
