Process technicians are responsible for the safe and reliable operation of refineries and petrochemical plants. Technicians are familiar with electrical systems and are experts in the safe use of hand and power tools. Process technicians work as part of a team, both indoors and outside, on a shift schedule that includes nights, weekends and holidays.
Qualifications: Process technicians have strong math skills and a sound team-building ethic and attitude. They have experience in maintenance, are curious about how things work and like to solve problems.
Education: Most employers require a high school diploma or equivalent and one or two years of classroom experience in process technology and on-the-job training. Some positions require a four-year degree in chemical engineering or related discipline. The North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA) provides a list of schools which provide process safety educational programs.
