The BARS (behaviorally anchored rating scale) is a scale that assesses performance based on well-defined behavioral patterns. These patterns are used to rate everyone being measured. BARS are easy to use, and have clearly defined behavioral indicators, which enables consistent evaluation across trainees. Trainers and supervisors can conduct the evaluation process and employees can easily understand and accept outcomes. A behaviorally anchored rating scale is an essential component of any training program. Each table group will have a LOTO scenario and a BAR to evaluate trainee performance.

Stories are essential for putting procedures into practice, formal training in procedures and principles is necessary but is not sufficient. “Procedures aren’t real” you may overhear from an experienced operator. What does this mean? Stories provide the why behind procedures, the context and the urgency that procedures leave out. “We need to label the valves. Last night that new guy started to open the wrong valve — you know how dark it gets — and it could easily have created a pressurization problem in the re-boiler.” Stories also help us appreciate the boundary conditions for the procedures, and the workarounds that might be necessary. Is it possible to elicit and capture these stories?
