Collaboration is the cornerstone of progress, and when it comes to safety, working together is essential. At AFPM, we believe that sharing knowledge and best practices strengthens our industries and protects the workforce. That’s why we’re proud to participate in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls, May 5 – 9, a dedicated week focused on raising awareness and improving workplace safety.

Falls from heights—defined as four feet or higher—continue to be a leading cause of workplace injuries and fatalities, according to data from OSHA, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and AFPM’s Incident Classification Matrix report. Addressing this risk is a shared responsibility, and AFPM, the AFPM Safety & Health Committee and our Contractor Associate Members are actively taking steps to prevent these incidents.

As part of the initiative, we are voluntarily sharing proven safety practices and critical information to help employees stay safe when working at heights. Industrywide, companies have contributed valuable resources that emphasize key precautions, including inspecting fall protection equipment before use, securing tools and materials properly, and following safe procedures for climbing, descending and working from ladders.

"Safety is not proprietary throughout the refining and petrochemical industries. When we can share practices and address risks of working at height across industries, everyone benefits," says Lara Swett, AFPM Vice President, Technical & Safety Programs.

AFPM encourages all member companies to participate in the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls. As a leading advocate for safety in the fuel and petrochemical industries, we are committed to fostering a culture of safety and ensuring the wellbeing of all workers. Together, through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, we can continue to drive safety improvements and protect the people who keep our industry running.
