WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) today issued the following statement from Leslie Bellas, AFPM vice present of regulatory affairs, commending the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to grant Louisiana primary enforcement responsibility (primacy) for the permitting and regulation of Class VI injection wells in the state. EPA’s decision makes Louisiana the third state, after North Dakota and Wyoming, where carbon capture projects have a streamlined permit approval process that allows for safe and efficient implementation.
“AFPM members have long been committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations and products,” said Leslie Bellas, AFPM vice president of regulatory affairs. “Refiners, petrochemical manufacturers, and the U.S. midstream industry are leaders in carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) and we want to leverage the full potential of CCUS technology to further reduce the lifecycle carbon intensity of U.S. manufacturing and transportation. EPA’s decision to grant Louisiana primacy will accelerate the deployment of more carbon capture and drive additional carbon capture investment in a key industry hub. We applaud EPA’s support of CCUS.”
In July 2023, AFPM provided comments supporting EPA’s proposal to grant Louisiana Class VI primacy.
