This year’s AFPM International Petrochemical Conference (IPC) showcased the people, policies and trends shaping the future of the global petrochemical industry. Here’s a look at some of the many memorable moments:

ExxonMobil’s Karen McKee makes history with Petrochemical Heritage Award

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the petrochemical community over a career spanning decades and continents, ExxonMobil’s Karen McKee—president of ExxonMobil Product Solutions Company—was presented the Petrochemical Heritage Award on behalf of AFPM, the Science History Institute and the Founders Club at the opening session of IPC 2024. Karen is the first woman to receive the Petrochemical Heritage Award.

“We applaud Karen for her substantial contributions to our industry and congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition. She rightfully joins a long list of petrochemical industry greats, and her work and legacy in our sector—and on behalf of consumers—is far from over.” —Chet Thompson, AFPM president and CEO

Industry leaders share what’s next for UN plastics treaty negotiations

Ahead of the United Nations’ (UN’s) next International Negotiating Committee (INC) meeting, a panel of industry experts—and INC participants—spoke to IPC 2024 attendees about the essential components of a global agreement to end plastic pollution and the progress they hope to see as 190+ national delegations gather in Ottawa later this month.

Tracey Campbell of LyondellBasell, Greg Skelton of Sabic and Kerri Reyer of ExxonMobil stressed the importance of collaboration, transparency and trust across nations as an agreement gets ironed out.

International participation = global networking
